WhatsApp Unveils Built-In Contact Storage and Teases Username Feature

WhatsApp introduces a secure in-app contact storage feature using encrypted technology. The platform also hints at a new username system, allowing users to message without sharing phone numbers.

WhatsApp has introduced an exciting new feature that allows users to save contacts directly within the app, separate from their phone’s address book. This is especially useful for individuals who want to keep personal and business contacts distinct or for those who share devices but want to maintain their own contact list linked to their unique phone number.

To ensure security, WhatsApp has developed Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS)—a state-of-the-art encrypted storage system. When a user saves a contact, IPLS generates a unique encryption key on the user’s device. Retrieval of contacts is securely managed by the app, which authenticates the device’s primary identity before granting access.

In collaboration with Cloudflare, WhatsApp is enhancing security further by signing any changes made to a user’s contact directory. This guarantees that the saved contacts haven’t been tampered with, providing an additional layer of protection.

WhatsApp also revealed plans to roll out a username feature, which will offer users greater privacy. With this new system, users won’t need to share their phone numbers when messaging others, providing more control over who can access their personal information.

This update highlights WhatsApp's commitment to user privacy and security, setting a new standard in the messaging space.
